The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has slammed Jamia Millia Islamia for its negligence in implementing three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with three Palestinian universities. The MoUs were signed between President Pranab Mukherjee and the government of Palestine in October 2015. Therefore, Minister of State External Affairs M.J. Akbar wrote a letter to the varsity seeking an explanation for not implementing MoUs.
The issue came to the notice of M.J.Akbar during his visit to Palestine. The three varsities in Palestine revealed that no follow-up action has been taken since October 2015. On the other hand, Akbar directed the Vice Chancellor of Jamia to submit a report regarding the status of MoUs signed with other countries too. He mentioned that the varsity has to take the issue as the top priority and submit the report.
It has been more than one year since the MoUs have been signed and varsity neither took any steps nor interest in activating the MoUs. On the other hand, the three Palestinian universities which signed MoUs with Jamia are keen to take a step forward.
One of the officials of Jamia revealed that the varsity is also keen to implement the MoUs and approached Ministry of Human Resource and Development to grant funds for academic exchanges and capacity building initiatives. However, the delay in granting funds and cash crunch has delayed the implementation of MoUs.
Akbar also revealed that the education minister of Palestine is expected to visit India soon and the implementation of MoUs will strengthen the academic relations between two countries.
