More Demand for B.Tech Graduates in Job Market than M.Tech Grads

Irrespective of salary packages and availability of jobs, B.Tech graduates have more demand in the job market than M.Tech graduates. Many companies are keen to recruit B.Tech graduates. The poor level of research in engineering is becoming a matter of concern in the current perspective. On the other hand, the salary packages offered to M.Tech graduates are not up to the mark. The average placement package offered to a B.Tech graduate is five times higher than the salary offered to an M.Tech degree holder.

For instance, PICT (Pune Institute of Computer Technology) recorded the highest packages were offered to B.Tech graduates. A popular company with an annual package of Rs. 30 lakh has recruited a B.Tech student at PICT, while the highest package offered to M.Tech students stood at Rs. 4.5 lakh per annum. The same tendency is being witnessed in other colleges where the highest salary packages offered to M.Tech students is less than Rs. 10 lakh per annum.

Engineering Jobs Problems: -

  • Most of the M.Tech students who studied B.Tech in tier II or Tier III colleges lack knowledge in fundamentals.
  • The average age for a UG graduate is 21 years, while the average age for an M.Tech graduate is 24-25 years.
  • Most companies prefer UG graduates as they are younger and can be easily moulded as per the necessities and requirements of the firms.

A professor of a reputed engineering college in Pune revealed that postgraduate engineering students are constantly failing to meet the criteria laid down by the companies. A few M.Tech students are not able to write a simple code that has become a major concern of the quality of education. As far as placement percentage concerned, most colleges are able to place 70-80% of UG engineering students. However, these colleges are struggling to place 50-55% M.Tech students every year, he added.
