NEET PG 2017: Centralised Counselling to be conducted for Admission to PG Courses

The Union Health Ministry has directed the states to conduct a centralized counselling for admission to all medical and dental postgraduate courses. Private, Government as well as deemed universities, will have to participate in this counselling from the session 2017. The decision to introduce a single window for admission to MDS, MS, MD and PG Diploma courses has been taken for the benefit of students.

The ministry also said that most of the states are in agreement of conducting a centralized counselling for admission to PG Medical Courses through NEET-PG. This will save the students’ time and money as they won’t have to apply separately for counseling of different states.

Prior to this, PG counselling for State quota seats was either conducted by a designated authority or individually by the medical colleges. Whereas the all-India quota seats were allocated by the Medical Counselling Committee.

Private and deemed universities will also have to admit students on the basis of centralized counselling. However, all-India Quota seats at State-level medical and dental colleges will be filled through the same process as earlier.

Earlier this year, the National Board of Examinations (NBE) had also scrapped DNB CET exam and declared that it will rather be accepting NEET PG scores for admission to the super specialty programmes. Also, the Supreme Court has ordered in April 2016 that admission to MBBS and BDS courses throughout all Indian Colleges will be done on the basis of NEET UG.
