On May 07, 2018, the High Court of Gujarat relaxed the admissions norms for the only deemed university in Gujarat, Sumandeep Vidhyapith for the admission to Post Graduate (PG) medical courses under state quota. Now, all the PG medical aspirants in Gujarat who cleared NEET-PG 2018 will be eligible for the admission to PG medical courses at Sumandeep Vidyapith under state quota.

Recently, candidates who had graduated from Sumandeep Vidhyapith approached High Court of Gujarat for a direction to the state government to accept their application forms for the NEET-based admission to PG medical courses under the 50% state quota. The students alleged that state government’s norms for PG medical admissions in deemed universities considered students eligible for the admission under All India Quota (AIQ) and not state quota. Therefore, PG medical aspirants from Gujarat had limited chances to get admission in the deemed university.
Challenging the admission norms of state government, a section of students filed a plea in HC. The petitioners also disclosed the details pertaining to PG medical admission process in deemed universities in other states. In various states, students from deemed universities are considered for the admission to PG medical courses under state quota as the varsities are located in the respective states, the petitioners submitted.

Contrastingly, the state government of Gujarat opposed the demand of students and informed HC that it was authorised to frame such rules, which were also approved by Medical Council of India (MCI). However, the court rejected the argument made by the state government and granted relief to PG medical aspirants who graduated MBBS from Sumandeep Vidhyapith.
