One Entrance Test to Replace Cut-Offs for Admissions to UG Courses?

The high cut-offs for the admission to undergraduate courses at various universities might soon end as the Centre is working on introducing Common Entrance Test (CET) for over 800 universities across the country. Currently, few top universities like Banaras Hindu University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University admit students based on entrance test. However, top universities like Delhi University admit students based on Class 12 marks. As a result, most of the boards ‘inflate’ marks.

However, there is no clarity whether the Common Entrance Test for all the universities will work out or not. The syllabus of various state boards differs from each other, particularly for humanities. HRD Ministry pointed that the Centre was looking at a pan-India syllabus that would ensure the idea of Common Entrance Test.

National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the Common Entrance Test on the lines of other competitive examinations for engineering, medical and other professional courses. According to sources, the government is supposed to formalise NTA by July 2017.

HRD Ministry planned to introduce CET for all the universities following the high cut-off marks required for the admissions. This is most common in top varsities like Delhi University. Delhi University receives almost three lakh applications every year for UG courses. On the other hand, the cut-offs of DU are as high as 98% and even 100% for some subjects.

HRD Ministry also pointed that the varsities often criticise boards for inflating marks. However, boards say that varsities declare high cut-offs that have been forcing them to do the moderation. It has come to the notice of HRD Ministry that boards inflate marks as much as 10 percent. As a result, a disparity has been created. According to HRD Ministry, CET is the best way to get admission to UG courses.

Currently, the government is trying to bring all the varsities on a consensus for the CET. For this purpose, the government is working out the exact modalities.
