Online Learning Grows 50% in 2016, Technology and English are most Sought-After Skills

A report released by Coursera, provider of online courses revealed that online learning trend has grown by 50% in the year 2016 in India. Interestingly, Technology and English are the most sought-after skills in online courses. Technology constitutes about 70% of the 10 most popular courses followed by English.

Currently, Coursera has around 1.8 million learners from India, and it has 23 million registered users worldwide. Coursera is the second largest base for online learning in India after the USA.

Out of 10 online courses offered in India, 7 are technology courses. It clearly indicates that the IT industry is playing a significant role in generating a good number of employment opportunities.The report also revealed that the significance of online learning has improved drastically compared to 2015. In the year 2016, online learning witnessed 50% growth especially in the areas of Technology and English.

The report further noted that the scope of online courses would only increase in the coming years and they will become extremely familiar. Coursera is an online education platform which offers various online learning courses from the reputed universities across the world.

Nowadays, most of the universities and reputed institutes in India are offering online courses. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is one among the initiatives taken by the government to give more emphasis to online learning.

Recently, Delhi University also announced that various courses under distance education would be offered online by giving importance to 'Digital India' initiative.
