Panjab University’s Dean Student Welfare (DSW) called a meeting on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, to revise the hostel fee structure. It was suggested in the meeting that from the coming session, students must be asked to pay the annual hostel fees in two installments.
Earlier, the students residing in hostel had to pay the hostel fee quarterly. Students will now have to pay the hostel and mess fund charges per semester. The amount will sum up to Rs.5680. The fee fund and fine have not been revised, added DSW member, Emanual Nahar.

However, the development fund fee that was earlier Rs.300 has been increased. Rs.750 will be paid by the students per semester as development fee. Nahar said that the overheads fee has been reduced to maintain a balance. He also informed that the changes have been made to generate capital for the university.
Ph.D. M.Tech and M.Phil students will now be permitted to stay in hostel for a duration one and half years i.e. three semesters, which was earlier 15 months. Ph.D. students be offered provisional admission in PU for a duration of 6 months. Provisional admissions will allow them to pay regular charges which will be much less than the daily wage charges that they used to pay earlier.
The university will start vacating the hostel for maintenance on May 31. This will give the students more time to leave the hostel as the semester ends in June. PU is also planning to scrap the rule that bounds the students to vacate the rooms within three days of finishing the exams.

Fee of the International Hostel has been increased to Rs.1000 which was earlier Rs.440. However, the electricity charges have been deducted by Rs.1000. Panjab University has also announced that the hostel fee will be collected in a single registrar account.
