President Mukherjee Urges Universities to Compete Globally

Delivering his speech at the launch ceremony of a book titled ‘Future of Indian Universities: Comparative & International Perspectives’, President of India, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee indicated that Indian universities must compete globally for research ranking to achieve world-class status. It is time to think about the role of Indian universities in the larger global context. All the Indian universities must lay emphasis on nation-building that can be made possible only through institution building. Upcoming Indian universities must also focus on competing with various renowned universities across the globe. Finding a spot on the tables of institutional rankings is the major objective that the Indian varsities must start focusing on, he added.

Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen released the book on the occasion. The Vice Chancellor of O P Jindal Global University Mr. Raj Kumar was a key editor of the book. Speaking at the ceremony, Amartya Sen indicated that Indian institutes and universities need more autonomy and freedom. It is time to think why Indian varsities fail to feature in the top 200 universities/ institutes across the globe. Universities in other countries are free from political obstacles and policies. Therefore, many global universities enjoy much freedom and autonomy. If the government wants to bring change in the education sector, it has to grant more autonomy to institutes of higher learning with, of course, certain limitations, he concluded.
