Shri. Pranab Mukherjee, President of India inaugurated the three-day centenary celebrations of Osmania University on April 26, 2017. The varsity has completed its 100 years and is, therefore, conducting grand celebrations to mark the centenary year. Various programmes that depict the culture of Telangana are lined up for the next three days. A documentary about the Osmania University will also be screened during the celebrations.
Addressing the gathering during the inaugural session of the centenary celebrations, Honourable President of India felt that it was his honour to be a part of Osmania University centenary fete. He recalled that the varsity had witnessed the ending of World War – I and World War – II during its journey and indicated that the varsity has witnessed momentous changes during its 100 years.

He termed the last Nizam of Hyderabad State, Osman Ali Khan as a visionary who founded Osmania University in 1917. The last Nizam of Hyderabad State had a dream of establishing a world-class educational institution of higher learning and realised it.
Shri. Pranab Mukherjee further expressed that the varsity was established with a motive that it would become a place where free minds come together, exchange views and ideas and live in peaceful co-existence.

The President also shared his concern over the fact that most of the Indian universities are not laying emphasis on research activities and lagging behind even in basic research and innovation. He suggested that the industry should have a direct interface with universities to boost innovative and research activities.
