Regional Conference For Central Universities Held in Guwahati

A regional conference for Central Universities was jointly hosted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) and Gauhati University on April 20 and 21. The theme of the conference was “Leadership for Academic Excellence in Higher Education”. This was the fourth conference in a row that has been organised by the HRD Ministry in collaboration with IIM Raipur.

Vice Chancellors, pro-VCs, registrars, deans of student affairs, finance officers and other high-ranking administrators from all the central universities of north-east attended the seminar which was inaugurated by a host of dignitaries, including Professor including Professor H Devaraj, Vice-Chairman, UGC, Ishita Roy, Joint Secretary (Higher Education), MHRD, Professor BS Sahay, founder Director of IIM Raipur, Professor Prem Vrat, founder Director, IIT, Roorkee, Professor Shekhar Chaudhuri, former Director, IIM, Calcutta, and Dr Mridul Hazarika, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University. The programme coordinator for the conference was Dr. Satyasiba Das, Assistant Professor (Strategic Management), IIM Raipur while the local nodal officer was Professor BC Goswami, Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Gauhati University.

The dignitaries expressed their views on various academic interests and the heads of different central universities highlighted the issues unique to this area and measures of resolving the same. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Prem Vrat. The academic sessions were conducted by him along with some other noted resource persons. Prof H Devaraj, speaking on the occasion, appreciated the ranking gained by Tejpur University in this regard and said it is one of the models for universities in North East India.

A workshop was also conducted on the second day, which was led by Prof Ramadhan Singh, eminent professor (OB& HRM), IIM, Bangalore. The workshop was aimed at developing a culture to achieve academic excellence and innovation.
