From today i.e. 10th August’ 16, an exhibition on prehistoric rock art starts at Panjab University. The exhibition will last a whole month and is organised by the department of ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology of Panjab University. The exhibition is organised to raise awareness about the first creative art of mankind, its main aim is to educate students about the most ancient art.
The exhibition is being conducted under IGNCA’s national project on rock and will last till 10th September’ 16. IGNCA has a program “Adi Drishya” which is the pre-medieval vision of man under which they have decided to preserve the data and rock art sites.
The project director of the exhibition, Dr B L Malla said that the rock is the basis of the earth and existence and it is high time that we start educating ourselves at least about the basics. He mentioned how the cavemen or men before them used to survive because of rocks and the very first invention, the wheel, was made of rock. Fire used to be generated by rubbing rocks together so, this just explains how important it is.
Dr.Paru Bal Sidhu who is the head of the department of ancient history, culture and archaeology said that rock is the basis and it was discovered by tribals. Rock art has changed or evolved over the centuries but art is always the portrayal of emotions. Ancient rock art shows the time men went through and how they survived.
