Shortage of Hostel Rooms at IIM Sambalpur: Students Helpless, Leave Course Midway

The classes of the fourth batch of Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur commenced on 30th July 2018 with a total of 111 students enrolled in the course. However, the number has decreased to 99 as most of the students were not allotted hostel rooms for accommodation purposes, revealed Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director of IIM Sambalpur.

When the institute began its operations, IIM Sambalpur could accommodate 60 students in its campus. Beginning this year, the institute doubled its intake capacity to 120 despite working from a temporary campus at the Sambalpur University. As of now, IIM Sambalpur does not have a permanent campus of its own. While elaborating on the situation, the director of the institute said that the government had initially allotted a total of three hostels for the students of IIM Sambalpur in the university campus. However, when the college signed the MoU in this regard, the university said that it could provide only two hostels by the month of July. Subsequently, the institute got access to only one and another half hostels that has led to the chaos further forcing students to stay in the dormitory.

These consequences have emerged as a big challenge for the institute and the authorities have expressed apprehension in this regard.

Mr. Deepak Behera, Vice Chancellor of the Sambalpur University said that a new hostel is under construction at the moment and as soon as the university gets its possession, IIM Sambalpur will be given access to it. He stressed the fact that the Public Works Department (PWD) should have completed the work and given the possession to the university before the commencement of the academic session this year.

The permanent campus of IIM Sambalpur will be constructed in an area of 180 acres, in the outskirts of Sambalpur city, funding for which has already been approved by the Union Cabinet.
