Sports Science Course Introduced in Bengal B.Ed University

The B.Ed University, Kolkata which is officially known as The West Bengal University of Teachers' Training, Education Planning and Administration (WBUTTEP&A) has taken a step towards breaking away from an only teachers’ training Institution by introducing Sports courses in the Varsity. Two postgraduate courses that are set to start in the University form 2019 July are Sports Science and Educational Planning and Administration. This is the first time the university is introducing something which does not go together with the general perception and general field of the University.

On the introduction of PG course in Sports Science, a University official said that numerous sports events are being held worldwide and also in the country. But there is a significant lack in the number of sports science professionals who have an understanding of the subject. This is why trained sports science students are valued worldwide and are now in high demand.

He also added that there are a number of Universities that teach sports and yoga in the country but there was no university as such to conduct PG course in Sports Science and Management in the state of West Bengal.

The West Bengal University of Teachers' Training, Education Planning and Administration (WBUTTEP&A) has 446 colleges under their affiliation and in most of them, sports and physical education are taught at an undergraduate level. The PG sports science course is open for admissions to a student that has passed graduation in bachelor's level Physical Science or Yoga course.

Soma Bandopadhyay, who is the Vice Chancellor of the University has said that the West Bengal University of Teachers' Training, Education Planning and Administration (WBUTTEP&A) or Kolkata B.Ed University will be the first university in India to offer a masters degree in educational planning and administration. The diploma is given on the same subject by The National Institute of Education Planning and Administration (NIEPA) which is the only other institute that offers this course but on a different level.

She informed that NIEPA is facing problems catering to the vast number of students applying especially from the north-eastern states of India. The West Bengal University of Teachers' Training, Education Planning and Administration (WBUTTEP&A) is now aiming towards producing the leaders in the education sector with relevance to the 21st Century with the Masters level course.
