SPPU Passing Criterion for Law Courses Not Revised; Results Announced as per Old Norms

Last month, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) announced that the pass percentage for law courses in all subjects would be minimised from 50% to 40%. It was a sigh of relief to many law students of SPPU and affiliated colleges. However, it seems like the varsity had not applied the revised pass criterion for law courses. Last week, the varsity announced the results of law courses and the evaluation was done based on old pass criterion, where students will have to score 50% to pass in each subject. The varsity’s policy was a shock to many students who pinned hopes on new pass criterion.

A couple of days back, few students of SPPU affiliated colleges met the Vice Chancellor Dr. Nitin Karmalkar and submitted a letter seeking his intervention. In the letter, the students urged the VC to implement the new pass criterion from the current academic session and declare the revised exam results as per new criterion.

Law students of SPPU have been urging the varsity to bring reforms in law courses and passing criterion, as many students from SPPU and affiliated colleges mostly fail in the exams. For instance, every year, only 10-15% first-year students pass the exams, and the statistics are very low.

The examination pattern and passing criterion were tough, and students requested the university to bring reforms. Finally, in December 2017, the varsity had come up with the new passing criterion and revised the required pass percentage from 50% to 40%. The decision to reduce the passing criterion was approved by Academic Council on December 19, 2017. However, the varsity failed to stick to the new criterion.

The officials of SPPU clarified that the new passing criterion would be implemented from the academic session 2018-19. Formal approval of the new passing criterion and passing it through statutes are still pending.
