Start-up Era: IIT Kharagpur Students to Run Businesses from Hostel Rooms
  • IIT Kharagpur has established Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (STEP) to encourage entrepreneurship.
  • It enables students to utilize their hostel rooms as entrepreneurship offices.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur is planning to launch a scheme that enables students to utilize their hostel rooms as entrepreneurship offices. The scheme will facilitate the candidates to set up the offices at a minimal cost. Director of IIT Kharagpur made this announcement during the 63rd annual convocation ceremony of the premier institute. He further mentioned that IIT Kharagpur had established Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (STEP) to encourage entrepreneurship.

It seems to be a noble initiative of IIT Kharagpur. New innovations will play a significant role in the development of the country. Initiatives like STEP will encourage the students to come up with innovative ideas and provide them a platform to popularise their innovation in society.

The institute is also planning to have at least 10% of foreign faculty in the next five years. IIT Kharagpur will take extensive steps to improve the global rankings. On the other hand, the institute has decided to restructure the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The restructured courses will offer a highly specified course with the core competence and will retain large flexibility.

Director of IIT Kharagpur also pointed that the female strength of the institute is only 9% at present. He added that it is time to take steps for encouraging more women to join the IITs. IIT Kharagpur also has plans to increase the intake of Ph.D. students up to 650 by 2022. He further indicated that research students should not solely depend on Google for information. Research scholars must refer to all the relevant journals in the process.
