The state government of Jammu & Kashmir has proposed to set up the campus of IIM or Indian Institute of Management at Narkura. The state government claimed that the new IIM should come up in Budgam district of Central Kashmir. The state government will provide 800 kanals of state land in the region for the establishment of the premier management institute.

However, the centre informed the state government that the campus of new IIM must come up within the 30 kilometers from the nearest airport. With the decision by the centre, the state government is uncertain about the decision to allot land at Narkura. On the other hand, the land also comes under the vicinity of Srinagar.

Syed Altaf Bukhari, Minister for Education revealed that the Ministry of Human Resource and Development would take the final decision on the land proposed by the state government. The ministry will inspect the site soon and proceed further.
In October 2016, the government of India gave the nod for the establishment of Indian Institute of Management in Jammu and an offshore campus in Kashmir. Establishment of IIM Jammu is one among the development projects of Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi. The centre reserved Rs. 1,000 crore for the establishment of IIM Jammu and offshore campus in Kashmir.
During the 2015-16 budget session, Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister of India announced the setting up of AIIMS and IIM Jammu in the state.
