The state government of Tamil Nadu is planning to set up a separate state universities ranking framework. The state government has been holding discussions with the officials associated with the higher education to roll out the plan. The motive behind the state government for setting up state-level ranking framework is to undertake extensive audit and evaluation of the higher learning institutes across Tamil Nadu.
Principal Secretary to Higher Education (Tamil Nadu), Mr. Sunil Paliwal revealed that HRD Ministry’s vision to create world-class universities is the inspiration behind the state government’s intention to set up a state level university ranking framework. The state government will take consistent steps to roll out the plan by the next academic session, he highlighted.

Tamil Nadu’s ranking framework will be on the lines of National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF). Currently, there are 22 universities in Tamil Nadu.
The idea to have state-level ranking framework was announced by Mr. Sunil Paliwal at 3rd National Higher Education Conclave organised by CII at Coimbatore. This year, the theme of the conclave was ‘Transformation in Higher Education’.
During his address, Mr. Sunil Paliwal pointed that Karnataka had set up a similar framework with a motive to help the varsities in addressing deficiencies. Giving details about the ranking framework, he detailed that there would be five parameters such as: -
- Equity
- Public Perception
- Placement
- Teaching
- Research

The state government has been working to improve the quality of education in universities, and ranking framework at the state level is one of the best initiatives in this regard, said by Mr. Sunil.
