According to the official report of Telangana State Council for Higher Education or TSCHE, there were no takes for undergraduate degree courses in 50 private degree colleges in Telangana for the academic session 2017-18. These colleges recorded zero admissions and have no other option except to shut down.
Apart from these 50 colleges, 150 private degree colleges recorded less than 25% of admissions during DOST (Degree Online Services) Telangana 2017. If these colleges have to function without any losses, they need to have at least 50% of students enrolled in UG degree courses. Due to the lack of enough admissions, it has become difficult for the colleges to run the classes, pay salaries and others.
For the academic year, 2017-18, over 2.25 lakh UG degree seats were filled in 1,110 colleges across the state. However, over 1.70 lakh seats remained vacant that has become a major concern for the state government. According to the observation of TSCHE, the number of colleges offering UG degree courses in Telangana is high than the existing demand. Therefore, lakhs of seats remained vacant in 2017.

A senior official associated with TSCHE pointed that there was no necessity of degree colleges in some regions. After the bifurcation of Andhra and Telangana, the state government of Telangana has not given approvals to more new degree colleges. Similarly, the state government will not grant approval to new degree colleges further. Instead, the government is planning to shut down 350 UG and PG degree colleges.
The Telangana UG and PG Recognised Colleges Association objected the state government’s idea of shutting down 350 colleges.
