Tezpur University has been placed among the top 1000 universities in the world in the recently announced Times Higher Education (THE) rankings for the second consecutive year. The varsity managed to find a spot in the band of 600-800 ranks. THE announced World University Rankings 2018 on September 5, 2017.
Besides Tezpur University, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati has also been placed in the same bracket of 600-800 band, making it the second one from the North East region. While ranking the institutes across the world, THE takes into account the University or Institute's performance with respect to International Outlook, Knowledge Transfer, Teaching and Research.
Research output and quality education are the areas where Tezpur University has scored more. Around 30 higher education institutes from India managed to find a spot in the list of top 1000 universities or institutes across the world.
The performance of IITs in the THE World University Rankings has been disappointing this year. Not even one IIT managed to secure a rank in the list of top 200 institutes of the world. Research is one of the key areas where Indian institutes are still lagging behind. Proper funding and support from stakeholders are necessary to improve the research output of these institutes.
The HRD Ministry had proposed for project Vishwajeet for bolstering infrastructure and research in seven IITs. However, the project was rejected by the Finance Ministry due to the poor performance of IITs in World University Rankings. Even Indian Institute of Science (IISc) which is known for exceptional research output failed to be on the list of top 200 universities or institutes across the world.
