Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Tamil Nadu is conducting the TNEA 2022 Counselling process. The DTE is also responsible for the release of the rank list and the admission process to the state government engineering colleges. There are approximately 440 colleges in Tamil Nadu accepting TNEA 2022 counselling. In total, among all the colleges there are about 1,51,870 available seats only. Every year seats remain vacant due to low registration for counselling. However, after revoking the entrance test, and direct admissions based on Class 12 marks, this year, 2022, has seen the maximum number of registered candidates.

As per the TNEA officials and the information available, with the declaration of the Class 12 Results, approximately 15,000 fresh registration have been done. Also, till July 22, 2022, only 1,29,987 candidates had submitted their documents. However, with a rapid growth within 5 days, 30,000 more candidates had submitted their documents.

Since Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, took over as the Chairman of AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), he made a number of reforms. He reduced the number of seats in the engineering colleges and only allowed colleges with 50% seats full in the general courses to introduce new and conventional courses. Initially, most colleges and faculty objected to the matter and also took it to court. But eventually, now with the introduction of new specialities such as, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science students are more interested in pursuing Engineering as a career option.

G.Laxmi Priya, Commissioner of Technical Education pointed out that these new specialities have opened ample job opportunities post Covid-19. Sharing a similar view, the Chairman of Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore, S. Thangavelu states that aspirants are now more interested in sectors like electronics, artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and data science, also due to high-end salaries. K.G. Parthiban, Principal of Danish Ahmed College, also states that the generation of Engineering graduates will soon return within the next 5-10 years with vast scope in these domains specifically. So, candidates must focus not just on their degrees but also on their interpersonal skills, communication, and core technical skills. Candidates should be multidisciplinary and skilled to cope with and follow the new trend, especially for students from rural backgrounds.
