The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made it clear in no uncertain terms that varsities have to distribute certificates on time and not cause problems in future educational and employment prospects of its alumni.
UGC secretary Dr Jaspal Sandhu has written a strongly worded letter to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), warning of stringent action under University Act, if the UGC receives any complaint pertaining to delay in releasing degrees.
UGC was forced to take hard steps in this regard after receiving numerous complaints from disgruntled students. The letter sent to RTMNU mentions that due to unwarranted delay, students are losing a lucrative career and academic opportunities.
To prevent this, RTMNU has been told to release degrees few days after the completion of course.
The UGC decision has been welcomed by students, to whom it has brought the much-needed respite. Sources informed that students have to wait a long time after the convocation ceremony. On the other hand, varsity administration has claimed that degrees of all students were released immediately after the convocation of 2013. In reality, however, very few students were lucky enough to get their degrees.
The students of professional courses are still making do with the provisional degree. With this provisional degree student face lot of problems appearing for job interviews or further admissions to courses.
