University of Pennsylvania Introduces First Online Master’s Degree in Computer Science

The School of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Pennsylvania has launched an online master’s degree in computer science.

The new online programme is more affordable as compared to other on-campus degree programmes. Additionally, students with no background in computer science can also apply for the online course. The course will be offered by an online education company Coursera.

Vijay Kumar, Family Dean of Penn Engineering, said the main aim is to make computer science more accessible and affordable to the students who want to pursue a career in the field.

MCIT online degree is the same as the on-campus degree of MCIT. It is the only computer science degree that does not require a candidate to have studied the subjects at the school level. It offers students from diverse academic qualifications to build a career in technology.

Jeff Maggioncalda, Coursera said the online degree represents the democratisation of computer science. It provides students with diverse backgrounds with an opportunity to learn something new.

Highlights of the MCIT Online Degree at Pennsylvania University:

• The total cost of the online degree in computer science is $26,300.
• The curriculum is comprised of four electives and six courses.
• The subjects include data science, computer science theory and applied, project-based learning and machine learning.
• The program will start from January 2019.
