Only 177 Ph.Ds Awarded in Entrepreneurship in Last 16 Years: EDII Study

A research study conducted by a faculty member ofEntrepreneurship Development Institute of India(EDII) Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat reveals a shocking report as to how research in entrepreneurship programme is yet to pick up despite the Government's efforts to promote entrepreneurship development programmes in the country.

The study reveals that only 177 Ph.Ds have been awarded by different Indian Universities in this subject compared to 20,271 in social sciences in the last 16 years.

The study also finds out the nature and pattern of 177 Ph.Ds in the subject:

Kavita Saxena, a faculty member of Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) conducted the study. This is quite contrasting to the Government's efforts to promote entrepreneurship programmes. The study reveals that out of 740 Universities that cover Ph.D programme, only 66 universities awarded Ph.Ds in entrepreneurship. It further identified women entrepreneurship as one of the most preferred areas of research.

A state-wise comparison reveals the number of universities that offered Ph.D in the subject during the period-

The main objective of the study was to find out quantitative growth of entrepreneurship research, nature and direction of research in entrepreneurship compared to social sciences in the last 16 years. It also aimed at finding out the contribution of universities in awarding doctoral degrees in the subject. Further, understanding the gender-wise, state-wise and language-wise distribution of research in entrepreneurship was also a key objective.
