Delhi University is about to enter the league of institutes like Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) and Xavier’s Institute of Communication (XIC) with the idea of starting its exclusive School of Journalism and Communication from the academic session of 2017-18.

With the aim to make Journalism more dynamic, DU will initially introduce an integrated five-year master’s program in its School of Journalism and Communication.

Setting up the school into motion is on the priority list of the Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi. According to the information provided by the university, the first batch of the MA will have 30 students.

The faculty that will be hired for the School will be responsible for governing all journalism and mass communication courses that are offered at all the colleges affiliated to Delhi University.

The School will not be established unless its name and framework are thoroughly discussed and determined by the stakeholders. The Vice Chancellor informed that various journalists and communication experts will be consulted to lay out a firm structure for the curriculum and infrastructure of the school.

The university is yet to decide whether the school will be started at the faculties of DU or will function from its separate building that will be established in the area available with the university. The School will initially function from the Faculty of Arts, North Campus until some land is allocated to it.

Admission to the MA course are likely to be done on the basis of an entrance exam. However, the university has not announced anything in this regard.

The vice chancellor informed that the final details will be made public once the consultation has been done. He also said that without a discussion with the experts, it is difficult to say anything about the details of the school framework.

Bachelors, conventional masters, M.Phil, and Ph.D. are among the other courses that the university plans to offer at the School of Journalism and Communication in the next few years.
