The first law common entrance test (CET), conducted by the Maharashtra state government has enrolled 37,000 students. The exam will be held on 18th and 19th June. 22,698 students have applied for the 3-year LLB programme out of which maximum number of applicants are from the state of Maharashtra. About 7,000 of these applicants are from Mumbai, followed by Pune where the number of students who registered is 2,960 and then Aurangabad with 1,155 students. Near to 1,000 students from other states have also applied for CET, of which 605 belong to Delhi.

A larger number of students from other states have shown interest in the 5 year programme than in the 3 year programme. 14,214 students have registered for the entrance test for the five-year programme. 1,470 of these students belong to Delhi NCR region, followed by 965 from Lucknow and 808 from Bhopal. A total of 2,242 students have enrolled for the 5-year programme from Mumbai. Altogether, near to 10,000 registrations made were from Mumbai for the two courses.

Huge number of applicants have also applied from other cities in Maharashtra, such as Nagpur - 890 students, Navi Mumbai - 794 students, Amravati - 694 students and Ahmednagar - 630 students.

Principal of one of the colleges said, "Most students who apply for the five-year programme from outside the state seek admission in the Government Law College, Churchgate. The same numbers may not end up taking admission in Mumbai colleges,"

Nothing has been finalised regarding the number of seats in both law programmes. "After the entrance test, we will tell colleges to register with their intake capacity for the centralised admission process. We will get a clearer picture later," an official said.

This is the first year of operations of CET and the examination cell does not have a clear figure of the number of students who would seek admission in law colleges across the state.

Important Dates:

  • Date of Examination (Law CET - 5 years): June 18
  • Date of Examination (Law CET - 3 years): June 19
  • Announcement of Results: June 30
