AMU Closes 29 Distance Learning Centers Across the Country
- AMU has shut 29 out of 35 distance learning centres as they failed to meet the regulations laid down by UGC.
- However, the five other centres have passed the criteria and caters to 2,000 students every year.
Aligarh Muslim Universityhas shut down29 distance learning academic centresacross the country because they failed to conform to the UGC laid down regulations in 2017.
Professor, Mohd Nadeem Ahmad Ansari, Director of Centre for Distance Education, confirmed the same that AMU has shut 29 out of 35 centres. However, the five centres have passed the criteria laid down byUGC regulation of 2017. These five centres are located in Tamilnadu, Badayun, Moradabad, and two are located in Bihar. They are regarded as the popular distance learning academic centres of the university.

These centres are the main centres of theAMUand around 2000 students take admission every year. Whereas the other 29 centres which have been shut down by the varsity were only catering to 4,000 students.
TheUniversity Grants Commission (UGC)has madeNAAC accreditationmandatory for institutes and universities offering distance learning programmes. As per the new regulations, UGC has made several amendments to offer better education in the institutes and universities.

UGC had invited applications from all higher educational institutions for recognition of their distance learning courses for the 2018-19 academic year. However, UGC made some amendments and introducedNAAC criteriafor Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) for the approval of distance learning courses.
