The Secondary Examination Board Assam (SEBA) has made an announcement today, August 11, 2022, Wednesday to reform the exam pattern for the HSLC (Class 10 Board) exams. The announcement was made by the Chairman of SEBA, RC Jain. This change has been introduced in accordance with the New Education Policy of India, 2020 (NEP-2020). The NEP-2020 was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on July 29, 2020. This education policy was introduced to make the changes in the prevailing education system of the country to make it more coping and necessary for the current situation. The Union stated that all the education systems must follow and abide by the New Education Policy of India, 2020.

Speaking on the lines of the NEP-2020, on the announcement of the change of exam pattern for Assam HSLC, Chairman, RC Jain states that it is now time to focus on the quality of education and not quantity anymore. He states that the new exam pattern will be implemented from next year, i.eHSLC 2023. As per the announcement, the exam pattern for four subjects: General Science, General Maths, Social Science, and English will be changed. These subjects will have 45 questions of the question paper in objective-type questions only.

In detail, the HSLC question paper will contain questions for 90 marks and 10 marks will be given for assignments or Internal Assessments. So, from the remaining 90 questions, 50% that is 45 questions, will be an objective type carrying one mark each. And the other 45 questions will have a mixture of 2 and 3 marks questions. The previous format of having long answers for 4-5 marks will be dropped. This change is made to help the students score better marks.

For a very long time now, students have complained about the outdated exam pattern by SEBA. Students claim that the prevailing exam pattern does not help them to broaden their scope or prepare for entrance exams. Meanwhile, other education boards such as CBSE and ICSE are much more advanced and help the students learn and prepare for the entrance exams as well. In an interview, a student who has recently appeared for the HSLC 2022 from the SEBA board stated that if SEBA and CBSE question papers are compared, there is no scope of scoring marks in the SEBA question paper. The student also states that this change was long overdue for the education system of the Secondary Examination Board Assam.
