Canada: Consul General Reports an Increase in Indian Student Population

Consul General for South India, Consulate General of Canada, Jennifer Daubeny has informed that about 50,000 Indian students are enrolled in various universities in Canada. According to the stats, this number is likely to increase over the years.

Speaking at an interactive session organised by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore, Jennifer said that the number of Indian students going to India is more likely to increase from this year onwards. She also added that the affordable and high-quality education provided by the Canadian universities is the reason students are taking interest in Canada.

Looking at this as an opportunity to build educational ties, various Canadian educational institutions have established their offices in India. These colleges have reported an increase in demand for both undergraduate as well as post-graduate programmes.

Jennifer also added that Canadians students are showing interest in Indian universities for higher education. She also gave the example of the Manipal University and said that the university has been successful in attracting candidates through MoUs with Canadian educational institutions.

Stating the fact that Indians are the second largest immigrant community in Canada, she said that the country offers various job opportunities through working visas and attracts a large pool of IT professionals every year.

Jennifer also informed that the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau is likely to visit India in 2017 to strengthen the ties with India to open up opportunities for the citizens of both the countries.
