The 2020 class 12th board examinations will witness a change in the evaluation of humanities subjects. The CBSE board is planning to introduce practical and project work for the evaluation of humanities subjects (economics and science). The board is also working on the architecture exam to make changes in the same.

According to one of the CBSE senior officials, there are chances that the board might increase the marks allotted to practicals in subjects which are already a part of the examination system. The changes will be effective from the 2019-20 academic session and 2020 class 12th board exams. This revamped scheme will provide teachers with a greater say in board exams as they will be awarding marks for practicals and projects.

The main objective of the revamped scheme is to promote practical learning instead of mere theory learning which ultimately leads to rote learning. In order to reduce students' dependency on rote learning, the board has decided to introduce practical/project work in subjects like social sciences. Most likely, students will undertake project work for 30 marks in class 12th board exams and the rest 70 marks will be a theory exam.

As of now, the practical board exams are conducted in schools only but the marking is done by an external examiner of the board. The new reform will let the school teachers award marks to the students. However, the whole scheme is yet to be finalised. The board is planning to launch a balanced assessment where 15 marks are awarded by the school teacher, and the rest 15 marks are decided by the external examiner.
