Finally, giving an end to confusion regarding the conducting authority of National Eligibility Test or NET, University Grants Commission or UGC has clarified that it has convinced the Central Board of Secondary Education to conduct the NET examination based on which university and college teachers are recruited.

For the first time, uncertainty surrounded over holding National Eligibility Test after the Central Board of Secondary Education had written to HRD Ministry expressing its inability to conduct the examination. Earlier, CBSE claimed that holding entrance examination for various bodies (including NET) restricted the board to concentrate on its core objectives.

CBSE accepted to conduct the NET only after the intervention of HRD Ministry. Recently, a group of students protested outside the UGC office demanding to issue the notification and beginning of the application process for the NET examination scheduled for July 2017. The protest lasted for two days and the issue has been sorted out.

The UGC-NET examination takes place twice in a year, i.e., during December-January and June-July. V.S. Chauhan, officiating Chairman of University Grants Commission clarified that NET exam for June-July session will take place as per the schedule and there will be no change. UGC, CBSE and HRD Ministry had a meeting over the issue. During the meeting, it came to be known that the previous government had issued an executive order that entrusted CBSE to hold NET exam.

Earlier, CBSE had written to HRD Ministry that it could not conduct a lot of entrance examinations due to capacity crunch. During the Budget session 2017-18, it had been announced that National Testing Agency would be set up to hold all academic entrance examinations. In the case of no National Testing Agency in place yet, CBSE will have to conduct major entrance examinations.
