Central Universities Require More Funds than Technical & Management Institutes: Panel

As perHuman Resource Development Ministry, Central universities have more students enrolled with them as compared to management and technical institutes. Hence, they require more funding. The panel also expressed their concern towards the reducedallocation of funds. As per them, the funds do not match up with the objectives of expansion and are not enough for the growth in higher education.

The committee also pointed out that the allocation of funds forcentral universitiesis way less as compared to the number of students enrolled, the infrastructure required and faculty. Hence it is important for the department to increase their grant. Also, the number of students enrolled in central universities is way more than that oftechnical and management institutes.

As per the report, there are more than 40central universitiesunder UGC. Central universities were granted Rs. 6,455 crore this year whereas last year they were allocated Rs. 6,512. There has been a drop of 0.95% due to which the central universities are unable to meet the demands and provide essential facilities to the students. This is the reason that the experts feel there should be an equitable distribution of funds to balance the ratio and avoid any such hindrance.

Dheeraj Sanghi, Professor Computer ScienceIIT Kharagpursaid the current funding level for the education in the country is very low as compared to others. He also stated that this has been going on for past 50 years asIITsare into a lot of intensive research and hence require greater support from the department which they are not getting at the moment. To balance the ratio and improve thequality of higher educationin the country, it is very important that there is an equitable support system for all educational institutions.
