Union Minister of Human Resource and Development, Prakash Javadekar stressed the importance of higher education in the country and said that the central government is planning to give more autonomy to the premier institutes of higher learning in the country. Through this initiative, the role of the government will be limited, and it will act as a facilitator, but not a controller.

He mentioned that premier institutes like IITs, IIMs and IISERs would be given more autonomy based on their performance. He said that the government would not control these institutes and they are free to choose their path for becoming real research and innovation centres.

He further added that the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for research is being envisaged for IISERs on the same lines as for the IITs and IIMs. The real strength of the institutes gets reflected in international rankings. The government is going to develop all the institutes in a uniform manner so that higher ranks can be achieved.
