Civil Defence Directorate and Mumbai University to Offer Diploma in Disaster Management
The Directorate General of Civil Defence and Mumbai University will be offering a 1-year Diploma course in Disaster Management. The course will provide disaster management education to civilians through a practical approach.
The Civil Defence Directorate has announced that it would be launching a 1-year Diploma in Disaster Management course. It would be offering the course in collaboration with Mumbai University. The course would be targetted at providing civilians with training on how to handle natural and man-made emergencies such as a fire or an earthquake.
The Diploma in Disaster Management course has been scheduled to commence from September 2020 and will be available at the Civil Defence Staff College, Mumbai. As per the information provided, the course will focus on practical training of civilians and will take them through the operations of emergency response teams such as the fire brigade, meteorological department, bomb defusal squads etc.

As part of this course, students will also emergency-affected regions, such as flood-prone areas to gain practical knowledge about disaster management. The course aims to provide hands-on training to the students instead of focusing on theoretical learning through classroom lectures.
An official of the Civil Defence Force provided the information that students will also be provided placement opportunities after the Diploma in Disaster Management course. The official also pointed out that this will be the first course that will provide on-site training to students in Maharashtra and most of the courses available in disaster management colleges in India are offered through the online mode.

About the Directorate General, Civil Defence
The Civil Defence Directorate was established in 1962 and included four sections -- Fire Services, Communication, Civil Defence and Home Guards. It was established by the MHA as a body that would respond to national and international emergencies and provide relief in the times of calamities. The 50-year old organisation is now known as the Directorate General, Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards.
