The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a latest directive making National Cadet Corps (NCC) as an elective subject at various colleges across the country. The main objective behind taking this initiative is to encourage youngsters to join in armed forces. Most of the officials of NCC hailed the decision as well as expressed their concern that even though the colleges offer NCC as elective subjective, there isn’t enough staff to train the students.

Roopa Rani, the NCC officer at Jyoti Nivas College, revealed that most of the students do not know the benefits of joining NCC. The move that was taken by UGC will make the students aware of NCC and motivate them to join armed forces.

NCC Directorate, Karnataka-Goa expressed that making NCC as a compulsory or elective subject is a welcome move. NCC not only inculcates training but also it instills discipline among the youth. Currently, most of the cadets joining in NCC are limited to Republic Day and Independence Day fete. Hence, the government must also incorporate youth exchange programmes so that the cadets will have a chance to visit other countries like Maldives, Srilanka, Russia and Vietnam.
