The University of Delhi decided to put on hold its decision to ’adopt’ the recent amendments made by University Grants Commission (UGC). The amendments made by UGC are related to recruitment, promotions and workload. However, the teachers are claiming that if the varsity implements the UGC amendments around 4,000 ad-hoc faculty members will become jobless.

The decision has been taken at a meeting of the Academic Council, the statutory body of the varsity. Discussions were held on UGC recommendations and notifications of a Vice Chancellor appointed committee regarding appointment and promotion of teachers in various departments and colleges.

The main agenda of the meeting was to consider the proposal to adopt the UGC notification which gives details about the minimum qualification for the appointment of teachers and other academic staff. Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor had appointed a three-member committee to look into the issue relating to appointments.

The Academic Council had accepted the demands made by the teachers and decided to put a hold on the decision to accept UGC recommendations and amendments. The council stated that the committee has to study the amendments and the recommendations will also have to be made accordingly.

Teachers felt a sigh of relief with the acceptance of their demands by the Academic Council. They have been protesting since the time the University Grants Commission made the announcement. They also boycotted the evaluation process last year. They claimed that they might lose jobs if the UGC recommendations and amendments are implemented.
