Delhi University is deliberating the introduction of a system in the process of its undergraduate admission this year by which students of the reserved categories will be transferred automatically to the unreserved category if they meet the cut-off scores in successive lists. The University of Delhi is going to undertake this initiative in order to ensure social justice.

The varsity has introduced the EWS category from this academic season as a part of its initiative to enrol more students belonging to the reserved categories. During the DU Open Days, many queries related to the EWS category were raised both by the aspirants and their parents. Some aspirants complained that their respective SDMs were not aware of the EWS certificate they were required to issue.

The district authorities stated that they were not aware of the issue of EWS certificate which is causing a lot of confusion among the students belonging to the respective category.

A member of the Standing Committee of the Academic Council, Rasal Singh, said that there was a meeting of the body on 2nd May 2019 in which a decision in this regard was passed.

He explained this method by giving an example of a student of the SC category with 80 percent marks in his/her best four. Let us say that the cut off marks for Hindi (honours) in the first list for the general category is 82 percent and for the SC category is 80 percent. In the first list, the SC category student will get admission in the SC category, but if the cut off for general category falls to 80 percent in the second list, the SC student will be automatically transferred to admission under the general category. Hence, the unreserved seat will open up again for admission.

Rasal Singh said that this formula will be applicable to all the reserved categories, including St, SC, OBC, and also the EWS (Economically Weaker Section) admissions this year. The provision was functioning in Kirori Mal College till the year 2017 and it does not exist in 95 percent colleges of DU.
