From the current academic session, studying a foreign language along with an Indian language is mandatory in Delhi University’s School of Journalism. Among the foreign languages, students have many options to choose from including Spanish, French and Chinese. However, students have a limited choice to choose with regard to regional languages. The School of Journalism is offering only Bengali and Tamil as the compulsory regional language subjects from which students much choose.

DU’s School of Journalism is newly approved and started functioning from the current academic session. The School of Journalism offers a five-year integrated course where the students will be awarded an M.A degree at the end of the fifth year. The Executive Council of the Delhi University approved the School of Journalism at a meeting that took place on July 14, 2017.

The students must study the compulsory language in all the ten semesters. Students will be awarded six credits per semester for the compulsory language subjects. Passing in these subjects is mandatory for students to be eligible to obtain the degree. These languages will help students in securing jobs in regional and international media houses and companies.

An official of the varsity revealed that they have the faculty for only these two languages. In the long run, the varsity will add more foreign and regional languages.

The newly approved School of Journalism comes under Faculty of Social Sciences for which admissions will be granted based on the performance in the entrance examination. The five-year integrated course will be offered in English and Hindi medium of instruction.
