Electrician's Daughter Gets US Scholarship Worth 28,000 USD

A student from Jamia, Subia Parveen will get to pursue her class XI studies in the US under the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Programme. Subia is a student of class X at Jamia Senior Senior Secondary School, Delhi. It was her passion for writing and poetry which helped her bag this scholarship. Her father is an electrician working with Jamia Milia Islamia University who could only study till class XII. He said that his family has always been very progressive when it comes to education for the children. He is happy yet nervous about sending his daughter to the US.

After being selected by the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) programme, which is sponsored by the US Department of State, Subia will do her class XI in the US from August 2019-June 2020.

She said that her English teacher encouraged her to apply for this prestigious scholarship and the requirements for it were having an excellent academic track record and extracurricular activities. Subia has written many poems on social causes and has also taken part in a lot of debates, she has also participated in many writing competitions and due to her good writing abilities, she managed to write an essay easily on her ‘aim in life’.

Subia is thrilled about spending a year in the US and will be studying Science in class XII. She is looking forward to a career in biotechnology and is hoping that the education she will get in the US will help her achieve her goals. She has also appeared in class X boards this year.

Apart from Subia, there are three other Indian students who have been selected for this programme which offers scholarships for high school students from countries which have good Muslim populations. This exchange programme began in 2002 and it has benefitted many students. The students will get an opportunity to stay with the host families, attend high schools and learn about American society and values. They also help educate Americans about their own countries and history in the process.
