Engineering Students Take Up BPO Jobs in Campus Placements

Theengineering placement scenarioin Kerala has undergone tremendous change over the years. Earlier,IT companieswere preferable destinations for the engineering aspirants to shape their career. However, the shrinking job opportunities in IT sector is forcing the students to look for alternative jobs in other fields. With a motive to take up a job after the completion of course, many engineering aspirants are preparing themselves to work in alternative fields with less pay.

The similar scenario is being witnessed inengineering colleges, located in Ernakulam. Earlier, many IT companies dominated the campus placements and provided a satisfactory number of job offers to the graduating students. However, the number of job offers made by these companies has been declining. Therefore, many colleges are invitingBPOsto ensure a maximum number of students getting employed after the completion of course.

With the limited number of options left out, engineering students are ready to take up jobs in BPOs. These companies pay a very less salary compared to IT companies. However,computer science,electrical engineeringandITstudents are agreeing to take up jobs for a monthly salary of Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 13,000. Numerous BPOs dominated the recent campus placements in most of theengineering colleges in Ernakulam.

Even though the prevalence of start-ups is more during the campus placements, they recruit only two to three students.

On the other hand, the similar scenario is not applicable to all the students. While the top performing students are able to get jobs in IT sectors with attractive salary packages, students with average or poor academic performance are preferring jobs in BPOs. However, all the students who attend interviews conducted by BPO do not accept the job offer. On an average, only 10 to 15% students are taking up jobs in BPOs. Good spoken English andcommunication skillsare mandatory to be eligible for a job in BPO.

Majorly, IT companies hireengineering graduateswho are proficient in additional skills likeiOS,javaandandroid. These companies prefer engineering students with skills instead of training them in relevant skills after the appointment.

Even though engineering colleges are encouraging students to take up internships, only a limited number of students are able to clear the test conducted by the company for internship.
