GMAC Survey: Demand for Non-MBA Business Master’s Programme Increasing

According to a survey conducted by GMAC, preference for non-MBA Business Masters Programmes have increased amongst Indian students aspiring to study abroad. The survey reported that courses like marketing, global management, data analytics, entrepreneurship and supply chain management have gained popularity over the years.

The survey was conducted by GMAC for which responses were collected between February and December 2016 from 11,617 registered individuals. The report says that the number of candidates opting only MBA Programmes has fallen from 61% in 2009 to 57% in 2016 (Indian aspirants only).

The report also suggests that there has been an increase in demand for non-MBA business master’s programmes. The student considering these programmes increased from 4% to 10%. Following is the year-wise report indicating preference of India candidates for such programmes.

The survey also suggested that younger students and even graduate freshers apply for such programmes. Whereas, MBA programmes are opted by candidates who have a certain amount of work experience seek enhancement of leadership skills.

The respondents of the survey also revealed that consulting, finance and accounting and products and services are the most preferred universities where postgraduates want to work. The inclination to work in the above sectors has increased over the years. The only sector that has seen a slight drop is the technical and IT sector.

The biggest worry of candidates aspiring to study abroad is education fund as most of these programmes are very costly. Respondents of the survey indicated that taking huge debts for education is the major reason why they drop the idea of studying abroad.

55% of the respondents give up the opportunities to study abroad due to lack of funds. Most of the students applying for the above courses rely either on scholarships and fellowships or on bank loans. Few students also depend on personal savings and earnings.
