Haryana Govt. to Establish a College for Hearing & Speech Impaired at Karnal

With an objective to promote equal education opportunity, the government of Haryana will establish a college for the deaf and dumb at Karnal. It will be the first college in North India for speech and hearing impaired students. The estimated cost for the construction of the college is Rs. 20 crores.
Similarly, to generate or provide employment opportunities to differently-abled students, an Institute for Skill Development and Employment Generation will also come up under a central scheme.

Krishna Kumar, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Haryana revealed the cost for the construction of the college at Karnal would be equally shared by both the state and central governments. He further added that the Union Ministry of Social Justice has given its approval for the construction of the college.
The ministry will also offer a three-month internship for students with disabilities and financial assistance of Rs. 2,000 will be provided to them.
Currently, a screening committee constituted by the ministry is reviewing the applications from Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) for operating the colleges.
There are various deaf and dumb schools in the state which are being administered by the Haryana Welfare Society for Hearing and Speech Handicapped. There are a total number of 3,925 children in the state with speech and hearing disability out of which 2,060 are speech impaired, and 1,865 are hearing impaired.
