After taking initiatives to increase the intake of IITs, the HRD Ministry is planning to ask Central varsities to admit more students. The proposal will be made at the VCs meet with Prakash Javadekar which is scheduled to take place on October 7, 2016, in Varanasi.

The University Grants Commission has circulated the agenda of the meeting to all the central varsities. Currently, there are 40 central varsities in the country.

According to the sources, the HRD Ministry will urge the varsities to optimise the use of their resources and infrastructure by admitting more students. VS Oberoi, Secretary of Higher Education Department, had written to all the 40 vice-chancellors on the issue about two months ago. However, the matter will be raised at the Varanasi meeting again.

One of the VCs mentioned that the pre-expenditure in the central universities is extraordinarily high compared to the state varsities. Hence, the former can afford to increase the seats. He also said that unlike IITs, central universities had not been given a specific target to achieve in regard to enrollment.

Even the 12th Five Year Plan prepared by UGC has suggested that the central varsities can increase the intake by 100 percent during the plan period. The document stated that the varsities could increase the intake according to the campus area.
