IIMs Hopeful of Complete Autonomy This Year
Ashish Nanda, Director of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad revealed that the government had addressed all their concerns which were raised on IIM Bill and they hope that IIMs will get autonomy by the end of 2017.
As per Indian Societies Registrations Act, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are regarded as the autonomous institutions in the area of management education and research. All the IIMs across the country have independent control and carry out its daily operations. However, in the year 2015, the government decided to bring changes in the functioning of IIMs. For this purpose, the government introduced the IIM Bill 2015 draft.

Some of the experts were of the opinion that various clauses in the draft bill are beneficial to IIMs and some of the clauses pose a threat to the autonomy of older IIMs across the country. Therefore, the heads of older IIMs approached the central government, and the discussions regarding the autonomy had taken place for one year. After the discussions, IIMs are hopeful that they will get complete autonomy this year.
The decision regarding granting autonomy to IIMs has been revised various times. There have been several discussions between HRD Ministry and PMO Office. As per latest draft of the bill which has been vetted by the Ministry of Law agreed to most of the suggestions made by PMO Office. As per suggestions made by PMO, President will no more be a visitor to IIMs.

The draft bill was later sent to PMO, and it will be introduced in Cabinet this year, and later it will be tabled in the next session of Parliament.
