4 Scientists from IISER to Create India's First Quantum Computer
4 Scientists from the Indian Institute of Scientific Education and Research will work on creating India's first quantum computer and quantum communication network. This is the first step taken by the government to promote research work in the field of quantum technology and foundations.
In a bid to make India a superpower in Information Technology, 4 scientists from the Indian Institute of Scientific Education and Research have planned to work on building a quantum computer, a first in the country. This activity will be undertaken under the Cyber-Physical Systems or CPS programme of the Department of Science and Technology.
IISER has stated that this initiative is one of the biggest in its field with 300 crore funding to help them build the quantum computer. The initiative will be undertaken between various institutions across the country.
The officiating director Prof Arvind from IISER has said in a statement that this initiative is one of the first steps toward creating the quantum computer the quantum communication network. They will also be setting up advanced research infrastructures for this step as well as train the human resources needed for the venture.
The team will consist of four people including Prof Arvind, Prof Kavita Dorai, Dr. Mandip Singh, Dr. Sandeep Goyal. IISER Mohali has one of the largest group of researchers in India, with over 30 researchers who are dedicated to working in the fields of quantum technology and foundations.

Prof. Arvind explains quantum computers as computers that can carry out tasks in minutes that would otherwise take years for the best of supercomputers in the world to complete. He adds that this has been the first step taken by the government in the pursuit of research in quantum technologies and applications. He also states that many countries like the USA and China have already built prototypes for quantum computers.

Prof Arvind has stated that they expect to complete the foundation for building a quantum computer along with a portable and secure quantum communication setup as well as methods for precision measurements.
