IIT Bombay Launches ‘Swarachakra’, an Indian Language Android Keyboard
‘Swarachakra’, an Indian language Android Keyboard has been designed by Industrial Design Centre of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
‘Swarachakra’, an Indian language Android Keyboard has been designed by Industrial Design Centre of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. The keyboard is available in 12 languages and one can download it from the Google Play Store on their Android mobiles.
The Industrial Design Centre has designed ‘Swarachakra’ as a part of the “Better Together” framework that comes under Future Interaction Technology Lab at Swansea University located in the United Kingdom (UK). United Kingdom’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Council has funded the project.

The app will help the users to type on phone through the keyboard in different regional languages and the same conversation can be viewed on another device.
One of the officials of the institute explained that usually when people type on social media apps like Hike, Messenger, Viber, Facebook and WhatsApp, the users are able to view the keyboard on half screen. However, ‘Swarachakra’ app will allow the users to view the entire screen on their mobile while using the keyboard from another device.

He further explained that there are 340 million smartphone users in India and most of them prefer to type in Indian regional language. Moreover, they use a mobile phone frequently rather than a personal computer. The keyboard will enable the users to type on one phone and the same can be viewed on the second phone.
University of Cape Town, Social Impact Lab, MercyCorps, Microsoft Research UK, iHUB Research, IBM Research India, Microsoft Research India and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, have also supported the project.
