IIT Bombay to Represent India in World Finals of Student Design Competition-US

14 B.Tech students won the student design competition held at the Vellore Institute of Technology from 1st-3rd February. They will represent India now in the world finals in Utah, USA in November.

A total of 14 B.Tech students across departments at IIT Bombay won the Asia Pacific regionals of Student Design Competition (SDC), which isan annual event organised by the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME). These students are working with the Unmesh Mashruwala Innovation Centre (UMIC).

This competition took place at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) from February 1st-3rd. UMIC, IIT Bombay will now get a chance to represent India and the Asia Pacific region in ASME-SDC 2019 world finals, which will happen in Utah, the USA in November.

The task for this year was to create a robot capable of placing and picking balls of different diameters (from ping pong to basketballs) on a pipe 3-5 cm in diameter and 20 cm height. One-on-one matches took place and the team that had the highest score won the round.

IIT Bombay won the first price in which 21 teams, including IIT Indore, IIT Roorkee, three teams from NIT, VIT and an international team from Hong Kong Polytechnic University took part. VIT Vellore got the second spot and scored 24 points. Team UMIC had 26 points.

Deepak Kumar, a fourth-year aerospace engineering student, said that they won the finals in 2017 held in Florida. The robot completed the task in two minutes and 45 seconds, but they will try different techniques and fast motors to reduce the time by half. VIT will also be a part of the finals.
