Looking at the current pandemic situation in the country, a group of teachers from IIT Delhi has submitted a proposal to the HRD Minister this month in which they have suggested that the educational institutes must start their new academic session from January 2021 and suspend face to face classes for a year. The teachers assure that the institutes will make up the lost academic time within twelve to eighteen months.

According to the proposal, a combination of the use of existing online resources like NPTEL and Ekalavy, reduction of vacation periods, flipped mode of instruction, use of online resources for primary school students can minimise the loss of the academic sessions.

Nalin Pant, a professor at the department of chemistry at IIT-Delhi and member of the institute’s Board of Governors had signed the proposal. He confirmed that the documents are submitted to the HRD and IIT Council for consideration.

The document states that the six-month delay is necessary to avoid risk to students, teachers, parents and grandparents as classrooms and hostels could be the super-spreaders virus among the vulnerable group of people.

The proposal also suggests that the time till January 2021 should be utilised by the higher education institutions to enhance resources and develop strategies for online classes and evaluation. Emphasis must be on students in remote areas and poor internet connectivity like such students can visit the nearest educational institution for online examinations. IITs, IISERs, Delhi University and other central universities can take such initiatives.
