IIT Delhi Launches Beacon and Smartphone System for Recording Attendance
Incurring a cost of Rs. 14 lakh, these beacons will act as sensors to marks attendance of students when they enter the classrooms.
In order to resolve the attendance issues of students and teachers, IIT Delhi has introduced a system of beacons and smartphones in the classrooms for recording attendance. Incurring a cost of Rs. 14 lakh, these beacons will act as sensors to marks attendance of students when they enter the classrooms.
In order to mark their attendance, students will have to click an instant picture and upload to mark their In and Out attendance. The beacon and smartphone system is one of the projects that the IIT Delhi will display at the Open House on April 22, 2017.
Open House is IIT’s annual event that is conducted to present projects, path-breaking research work, advanced laboratories and facilities of the premier engineering institutes.
Brejesh Lall, Professor in charge of the Project, said that attendance record has always been a critical aspect as students complain that their registered attendance does not reflect in their actual records.

A mobile application has been developed and synced with the beacons to introduce transparency in the attendance recording system, the professor added. The beacon and smartphone system makes use of two technologies i.e., geo-fencing and face recognition.
The attendance information will be collected in the dashboard. The project team will compile all this data and will forward it to the IIT server every evening. The system has been studied and observed for 8 months before the final installation.
IIT Delhi has also filed a patent for the technology to commercialise the project and benefit from it, Professor Lall added.

Other projects that will be displayed at the Open House are eco-friendly and low-cost cement, Automatic Strap Mechanism (ASM) for helmets used for motorcycles, building blast proof infrastructure for Indian borders and saliva-based non-invasive glucose biosensor.
