The hostels of IIT Delhi are under renovation, and it cannot accommodate more students. Therefore, IIT-Delhi will go for day scholar system. The institute admits 1,000 students for Master's programme.

One of the officials also revealed that it had been decided to increase Ph.D. seats by 20 percent this year. Currently, IIT Delhi offers 2,500 seats for Ph.D. According to sources, other IITs will also initiate day scholar system depending on the success of the move at IIT Delhi.

All the IITs were also asked to assess their faculty strength and infrastructure to decide the number of students they can admit without stressing on the resources. Since creating additional infrastructure and facilities for more students in hostels will take more time, IIT Delhi has come up with day scholar system.
