IIT Gandhinagar Launches Centre for Sustainable Development

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar is aiming at sustainable development by looking at becoming the principal resource centre for the same in India. IIT Gandhinagar is planning to do so through the launch of Dr. Kiran C Patel Centre for Sustainable Development which will offer global and local solutions through cutting-edge interdisciplinary research.

The Centre was launched on January 31st with funds from Dr. Kiran C Patel, a philanthropist, and a Florida based cardiologist. The Centre is also expected to have a network of national and global leading researchers and experts on sustainability. They will do research on waste management, water, energy, natural resources, pollution, and climate change.

The Centre will also undertake research on sustainability and related challenges. Cost-effective and sustainable solutions will be promoted through technology transfer and outreach programmes. It will be involved in technology transfer to local governments, NGOs, industries and also undertake collaboration with the policymakers to solve sustainability challenges. The Centre will also promote startups on sustainability with IITGN’s Entrepreneurship Cell by offering Seed Grants.

Prof Sudhir K Jain, IIT Gandhinagar’s Director said that it has been possible through Dr. Patel’s generous efforts for an institution with which he had no prior connection. This gift will help the students and faculty to work on the development of practical solutions for some of the major sustainability challenges through a combination of traditional knowledge, advanced research and field understanding.
